ROM game. Failed to Start?

I'll admit that I'm very new to the world of arcade games, and I'm attempting to play a longtime favorite NES game SkyShark, but after I installed it, it refuses to start with a red error message.  Failed to Start Game.  I'm not sure what the problem could be.  Other NES ROMs like Super Mario Bros works fine though.  What troubleshooting steps do I need to follow here?

perhaps you can try another file because it can be corrupt or wrong format

I did do some further testing and installed the RetroArch emulator with a NES Core, and attempted to play this game just fine.  I had to extract the game manually first.  Could this be the problem?  I thought SMF Arcade automatically decompressed the files on the fly when launching?

if a game is compressed it needs to be 7z or zip - rar will not work
sky shark works ok for me and it is a nes file

I found the problem.  For some reason when the game installed, it was applied as a Game Boy core.  I manually changed the Core to NES.  Now it works fine.
