Title: mars virus

yes so my entire external drive got infected with the mars virus some how and all the data on it including my games i had backed up on there and most of my programs got encrypted .... not fun times lol saved what i could and formatted the drive and bitlocked it weird windows defender didn't catch it.

Sorry to hear about what happened. Windows Defender has never been the best tool for such things, imo, and I haven't used it many years.

I had that happen to me a few years ago but it was when I was using Bit Defender Antivirus.
These days I don't bother with 3rd party AV's & also opt Windows Defender for all my PC's.
I have found 3rd party AV's use more resources (ie. memory) than MS's built in AV.
Imo Norton, McAfee & Kaspersky are the worst memory/CPU hogs (I have used many over the years). 

There is a setting in your Windows Defender AV called APP & Browser control which should be enabled.
Check that setting to see if you disabled it by mistake.

yeah thanks guys i do believe i did turn them setting off chen for some reason or another lol but there back on now might have been a torrent file i DLed, and i allways DL to my external drive just in case the torrent is infected
